Talk with Gabriele Schor (The SAMMLUNG VERBUND Collection, Vienna) and P?nar Derin Gençer (Istanbul Performance Art, Istanbul)

On the occasion of the exhibition ?not what you think!? which gathers videos of female contemporary artists from Turkey/Kurdistan, Iran, Saudi-Arabia and France/Algeria all of whom use their own body as their artistic medium, hinterland is hosting a talk with Gabriele Schor (The SAMMLUNG VERBUND Collection, Vienna) and P?nar Derin Gençer (Istanbul Performance Art, Istanbul).

The topic that will be discussed is the collecting of performance based art in the medium video as well as exhibiting it. P?nar Derin Gençer will also provide information about performances of Turkish/Kurdish feminist artists while discussing with Gabriele Schor possible parallels and differences of the artistic background and traditions, initial conditions, and characteristics of the Feminist Avant-Garde in Austria and Europe in the 70s.

Gabriele Schor (*1961, Vienna) studied philosophy and art history. She is an author, curator and since 2004 Founding Director of the SAMMLUNG VERBUND Collection, Vienna that has a focus on the Perception of Spaces and Places and on the Feminist Avant-Garde of the 1970s – a term which Schor has coined in order to highlight the pioneering achievements of these women artists.

P?nar Derin Gençer (*1985, Ceyhan) is an artist, curator, medical doctor based in Istanbul and Stockholm. She is the founder and creative director of Istanbul Performance Art and 24 Hours Art, as well as chief curator of Open Performance Space, Istanbul. The power, identity, belonging, gender, space, ideology, human mind, body and soul feature as her research subjects.
