A Change is Gonna Come , 2015

Marco Pezzotta (*1985)

In April 2015 at the Schleifmühlgasse 12-14 / artist run space, 6 art-works will gather us in a narrative. From a well-chosen position, one could grasp a feeling of fragmented New Years Eve scenery. In the back, you could imagine distorted song A Change is Gonna Come playing, but for sure we almost hear the sound of glass noise. There is a table holding two glasses, both labeled in gold with the number 2000 on it. We might be waiting, or just entering the much hyped year of big changes, prosperity and development, the year 2000. Next to it, two-sampled artist?s tongues are sculpted, in an engaging kiss. This kiss suggests human presence and relationship between two persons that artists understand as a self-defining process. It is not a coincidence that those objects are displayed on a drawing showing an older man and younger boy in conversation. This drawing as surface is document of another history moment, where the elder one transforms an experience and knowledge for future of the youth. On the main wall, in the back of the table, a stereotyped, an exotic image of African sunset hangs. Because of the colors when viewed upside down, it reminds us of the German flag. It reminds us on presence of Western power that has been involved in shaping of our identities, urge for exporting and consuming exoticism, finally creating problematic archetypes that in time of crises are always coming back. This surreal scenery is created by sensitive, mainly small format artworks, which remind us on indeed some sensitive topics.

The artistic interest from Marco Pezzotta lays in examining different systems in which our identity is being either formed or changed. We stand in those systems as individuals or as part of a group. For describing and shaping these relations Marco uses objects that function as tools for a narrative. They appear from another space and time, floating between digital and physical. The artist creates a fragmented narrative in which we as audience with our own references and input are a necessary factor for understanding the work. Our task is to discover the system that we observe and in which we stand. Sometimes the aim is to re-organize them, in order to recognize them.

This creative traveling soul, Marco Pezzotta is an Italian born artist, currently based in Berlin. He has been artist in residence in South Korea and at the Museums Quartier in 2013, when he participated also as part of the well received exhibition FACELESS. He is back in Vienna to open his solo exhibition, directly from Pakistan, where Vasl, the only non-profit organization for contemporary art in that region, hosted him.
