About

PLENUM is the union of seven recorder players living in Vienna, specialized in Early Music, contemporary compositions, and free improvisation played with square recorders made by Herbert Paetzold. In this constellation the PLENUM members solely play these square recorders, whose harmony reminds of the sound of a church organ. Inspired by the design of organ pipes, the recorders give a futuristic impression, very rough and technical. To the players they offer a huge range of sounds stretching from spheric air sounds and full tones to cool, noisy timbres.

The ensemble's instrumentation ranges from basset to subcontrabass recorder. It was founded in 2012 and consists of Angélica Castelló, Gobi Drab, Katrin Hauk, Thomas List, Steffi Neuhuber, Maja Osojnik, and Reni Weichselbaum. The wild mixture of musicians comes from a variety of musical backgrounds, including Early Music (Ensemble MIKADO), Contemporary Music (das kleine symposion), Rock Music (Broken-Heart-Collector), free improvisation (ÖNCZkekvist, snim, …) and Experimental Music (FruFru, Black Biuti, Low Frequency Orchestra, Rde?a Raketa). All members share a great curiosity and openmindedness to try out and experiment with the unknown, thus opening new artistic perspectives and inspiring each other.

PLENUM is:

1. The plenary assembly of a corporation, or members of a parliament.

2. The full sound of all registers of an organ.

3. The union of seven recorder players living in Vienna, specialized in Early Music, contemporary compositions and free improvisation played with square recorders made by Herbert Paetzold.
