Luc Courchesne (Professor at Université de Montréal, Director of research at the Society for Arts and Technology - SAT, Canada)

The proliferation and increased mastery of interactive, immersive and networked media is, as McLuhan professed, dressing us in technology. Dressed and immersed we are, socially engaged in a « reality jam » with the physical, the augmented, and the virtual. In the process, we have turned from spectators to users, visitors and now inhabitants of our own arts. Courchesne will present his recent works and an overview of the research at Montreal’s Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) on immersive scenography, intelligent interaction and network experience.

Luc Courchesne is a pioneer in digital art and experience design. From environmental graphics and exhibition design to interactive portraiture and immersive experience systems, he has created innovative works which were shown extensively in galleries and museums worldwide including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Canada’s National Gallery, Paris’s La Villette, Barcelona’s Fundació La Caixa, Sydney’s Art Gallery of New South Wales and Wired’s Next Fest. He earned prestigious awards such as the Grand Prix of the ICC Biennale 1997 in Tokyo, an Award of Distinction and several Honorary Mentions at Prix Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria. His work is also part of major institutional, corporate and private collections in North America, Europe and Asia.

Born in Quebec (1952), Courchesne graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is currently full professor at Université de Montréal, a founding member and director of the Metalab at the Society for Art and Technology [SAT] and member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
