STELIOS MANOUSAKIS (GR/NL)

Stelios Manousakis (Crete, Greece) is a composer, performer, sound artist and researcher. In these capacities he strives to develop a new musical and artistic language that is both visceral and cerebral, communicating in a purely cognitive and experiential level while being complex and multilayered.
Stelios – a musician and composer, sonologist, linguist and digital artist by training – operates in the convergence zone between art and science and engineering, composition, performance, and installation, Western art and ‘digital folk’ idioms. In the core of his artistic philosophy lays the notion that compelling music and time-based art can be conceived and designed as a growing organism, an emergent ecosystem or a complex dynamical system, unearthing rich, complex and organic worlds through iterative processes. To this extent, he applies complexity science, cybernetic and biology-inspired models in software that he develops to generate novel musical systems, non-standard sound synthesis methods and interaction platforms, merging algorithmic finesse with the expressivity of improvisation or the immediacy of audience participation. This approach extends from live electronic or electro-instrumental open compositions, to interactive multimedia and sound art installations, to fixed medium pieces and film music.
Besides his solo work, Stelios is a founding member of several music ensembles and multimedia groups. He is based in the Netherlands, and is finishing a PhD at the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS) in Seattle, USA; at the moment, he is in Vienna as an composer-in-residence with Kultur Kontakt Austria and BMUK.

R. SCHWARZ (AT)

R. Schwarz has developed a singular body of work around sound, space and architecture in various artistic and experimental settings. His approach is complemented by ongoing research in sound studies, that sets the basis for his artistic work, which comprises installations, objects as well as music.
He has studied architecture and computer music in Vienna and Sound Studies at the Berlin University of the Arts. Within his work, those fields are merging to new and poetic dimensions.
His works have been presented at museums and festivals as Ars Electronica – Linz 2012, Club Transmediale – Berlin 2010, Singuhr Hörgalerie – Berlin, Haus der Kulturen der Welt – Berlin, Moscow International Biennale for Young Art 2012, Wiener Festwochen 2007, TONSPUR für einen öffentlichen raum and Kunsthalle Wien.
Further he is founding member of the transdisciplinary design agency mostlikely and the Berlin sound art collective Berg26, was a member of the Vienna Noise Orchestra, composed and produced the music for the band Madchen Amick, performed as Modularsynthorchester with Patrick Pulsinger and Sebastian Niessen, did the audio processing for Georg Nussbaumer ?s 16 hours Wagner-marathon Ringlandschaft mit Bierstrom at the Donaueschinger Musiktage 2013 and lately joined Sonic Mmabolela, the annual South African residency for composers initiated by Francisco Lopez.
R.Schwarz will perform his latest works of exceptionally deep Musique Concrète, adapted for four channel audio playback: Isolated and augmented fragments of fixed sound, captured from nonmusical contexts, disconnected from its origin, elaborately processed and arranged to utopian, surreal soundscapes, tectonically shifting through space!
