About the book:

Cooking is a process in which humans and non-human things collaborate to create something delicious. Non-human entities, such as food, dishes, and tools, possess their own power and the ability to transform themselves. Sometimes,

non-human entities act independently of humans. For instance, foods such as yogurt and sauerkraut can ferment on their own without human mixing or heating. In other cases, non-human entities work in conjunction with humans,

such as in the preparation of a simple dish. All these processes involve the interaction of different actors, which we refer to as actants in the case of non-human actors. Each participating entity contributes to the action and outcome of a dish.

In cooking, we no longer consider the agency of individuals but rather a shared, distributive agency.
