For the duration of three days in October, Viennese project spaces present a varied program of openings, screenings, talks, guided tours and performances.
Independent Space Index is a self-organized, comprehensive index of local artist-run and independent art spaces (also called “Off-Spaces” or Alternative Spaces) in Vienna.
The Index acts as a platform of representation for the identically named local association of independent art spaces, formed in late 2017 as a response to right-wing politics and the threat of public cultural funding cuts in Austria.

Hito Steyerl: In Free Fall
In Free Fall incorporates a trio of works: Before the Crash, After the Crash and Crash, which tell the story of the current global economic crisis through the example of an aeroplane junkyard in the Californian desert. The aeroplane junkyard reveals the anatomy of all sorts of crashes: both fictional and real. This is an investigation of planes as they are parked during the economic downturn, stored and recycled, revealing unexpected connections between economy, violence, and spectacle. An example of this is the Boeing 4X-JYI, first acquired by film director Howard Hughes for TWA, which then flew for the Israeli Airforce before it was blown up for the Hollywood blockbuster, Speed. But the economic crisis doesn´t stop short of affecting the film industry either.
Through intertwined narratives of people, planes, and places Steyerl reveals cycles of capitalism incorporating and adapting to the changing status of the commodity, but also points at a horizon beyond this endless repetition.

Thema der Veranstaltung ist die Gedichtform Haiku und die mediale Verbindung von Poesie und Fotografie. Dazu entwickelten vier in Wien lebende Künstlerinnen Fotoserien, die sich an der Struktur des Haiku orientieren. Die an die Wände des abgedunkelten Ausstellungsraums projizierten Foto-Haiku verbinden sich zusammen mit Musik und Lesungen zu einer flüchtigen, installativen Situation, sichtbar nur im Rahmen der drei Veranstaltungsabende.

LIQUID COMPANIONS
LIQUID COMPANIONS plays with the artistic potential of the simplest means - from words scribbled on a piece of paper to drawings and collages. On the one hand, these techniques are fleeting, but on the other hand they are extremely flexible and agile. They quickly create visibility, can simply be attached to various locations or passed on. In addition, they are accessible to everyone, do not require any prior knowledge and can serve as companions, outlets and accomplices. The exhibition would like to use these properties in reference to the literal meaning of liquid - a substance that flows freely but has a constant volume - to create a space for thinking about value systems and alternative economies.
