To dwell means to make one’s home or to think about something significant for an
extended period of time.
Following Bachelard’s philosophical reflections in “The Poetics of Space”, shells, nests and the house symbolise childhood, spaces of tenderness, protection, dreams and fantasy. The places where we relive our memories of former homes in the form of daydreams remain with us forever. A dreaming person reconstructs their past world by touching a tablecloth of their childhood home and transforming it through their care. This feeling of nostalgia, but also of imagination, can usually only be conveyed in a poetic way.
Especially in this day and age, when it is increasingly difficult to find affordable housing, Bachelard reminds us how important it is to have a home that you can build from the inside out over time, like a shell.
