(Empty Set)
The act of looking into the light is like a photograph.
Look into the light and deliver the light.
The picture in front of me reflects you.
-Kaoru Arima
Kaoru Arima and Josh Brand both make work of a highly personal nature; Brand is not promiscuous in his choice of media – he is decidedly a photographer – Arima works in a variety of media; on and off over the years and in different locales he has run in Japan an exhibition and community space, the Art Drug Center.
Both artists eschew existing ideology in favor of developing their own vocabulary – internal, synthetic, idiosyncratic yet, above all, generous. There is a decidedly unfashionable quality to the literally experimental work of each artist - a genuine vitality generally absent from the present moment.
