As a child, I had nightmares. Often the same one. My hand would flicker between being white, bloated, amoebae-like in a black space – and black, shrunken, swallowed in a white space. These two images would flicker back and forth, horrifyingly fast, and I would awake soaked in sweat.

When a star is dying, it starts accreting hydrogen to the surface, which ignites and starts a runaway nuclear fusion reaction; the star suddenly brightens, its atmosphere expands rapidly, but at the same time the gravitational core, compresses into a very tight little space.
