Workers by Anka Krasna
Last year I began to paint Slovene workers today. Factory of Art - Maj?perk, which once produced wool and quality textile, has stopped operating like almost all the rest. I used tracing paper as my material, because its translucence allows me to show the simultaneous doubleness of character and emotional reaction of the individual. Thus are my workers (400 so far) shown as individuals with expressions of sadness, disappointment, anger, rage… beneath and above as they must appear if they want to keep their meager jobs and not fall out of favor with their employers - their superiors, owners, so they are without personality, exressionless, have no mouth because they cannot share their opinion, have only numbers on their work clothes - since they are only numbers - sewn on by hand, which hints at labour camps. I will place them on the floor of the gallery space, so that they completely cover it and we will have to walk on them. In order to entice visitors to walk on them, I will place on the walls some sketches, a few lines of text, also small mirrors numbered like the workers, so that the visitors will see themselves in them and think upon seeing that image.
