In recent decades, we have witnessed a rethinking of the idea of national identity. During socialism, the state invested in branding the ‘Bulgarian’. As Austria brands its ‘Viennese schnitzel’, so Bulgaria creates one of its national dishes ‘shopska salad’ with the colours of the tricolour.
10+1: Audio and Visual Codes of the National Identity will try to understand how the idea of national identity exists in the practice of 10 contemporary Bulgarian artists living outside their country and a foreigner who temporarily resides in Bulgaria. Through video, audio, text, photography and performance, the artists will express their own views on the concept of national identity, how their identity has been influenced and transformed by their lives outside the borders of their homeland, whether they have managed to preserve it or vice versa, rather it has blurred over time.
