Re: Action
Urban Resilience, Sustainable Growth,
and the Vitality of Cities and Ecosystems
in the Post-Information Age

Opening remarks: Gerald Bast, Hani Rashid

Re: Action puts forward the pedagogical trajectories and design works that revolve around sustainable urban development and the architectural response to the challenges of urbanization and environmental risks. Directed by Prof. Hani Rashid, the book indicates the fronts of action and the multifaceted architectural efforts toward urban resilience, sustainable city growth, and contemporary design strategies that defend the vitality of urban and natural ecosystems. Showcasing the design research conducted at Studio Hani_Rashid at the Institute of Architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna between 2016 and 2022, Re: Action demonstrates the diverse and highly creative interchange between students, educators, and leading practitioners engaging with contemporary environmental challenges and developing unique positions for a progressive and viable urban future.

Exhibition Introduction: Hani Rashid

Opening Times: 2nd of June - 6th of June 2023 from 10 am - 6 pm

The exhibition “WIEN>AI” showcases the future of urbanism and deployment of radical architectural solutions that utilize artificial intelligence (AI) primarily as a design tool. While AI’s potential applications in architecture are vast and uncertain, this exhibition takes a critical approach to its nascent capabilities and current limitations. As technology continues to evolve, it is crucial to examine both its enduring and problematic impact on architecture and city planning, especially when considering the socio-economic-political implications and ramifications of an unbridled reliance on this technology and its exponential growth in the discipline.

The exhibition features architectural proposals for Vienna’s future, focusing on the railyards and various territories between Heiligenstadt and Spittelau. The works on display utilized AI-enabling technologies such as Midjourny, Dall-e, and ChatGPT to generate, survey, and eventually develop new and unexpected design concepts and proposals for this particular precinct in Vienna. While these technologies allow for radical and visionary ideas to surface from a collective human-machine imagination, they also raise significant questions about the role of humans and our notions of creativity and ethics in the formation of new and intelligent architectural proposals.

Through a unique insight into the intersection of technology and architecture, “WIEN>AI” offers an opportunity to explore the current research conducted at Studio Hani Rashid at the Institute of Architecture at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Visitors can experience how AI and humans can collaborate to create innovative and inspiring architectural designs, while also questioning the ethical and creative implications of such collaborations.
