Everyday environments in public space are undergo constant transformation. Places and sites of urban culture fade away, lived realities and spatial situations change or vanish entirely. Trude Lukacsek investigates and documents such periods of transformation, conjuring up recollections of spatial situations that had disappeared from view and creating something like a condensed memory. The exhibition takes us on a journey, an expedition to sites that, as witnesses of sorts to Vienna’s more recent history, are at odds with the surface of a city under constant renovation. Lukacsek’s works proffer images of Vienna, spaces of everyday culture, that no longer exist in the form in which she depicts them.
In her urban image fragments, another cycle within the exhibition, Lukacsek focuses on the designs of store entrances and façades, details of walls and company nameplates, signs and decorations. Her interest in this cycle is in the anonymous design, the play with colors and patterns, the juxtaposition and succession of shapes and material structures.
Here is a landscape painting in an abandoned motor-racing circuit, there the disintegrating letters on a billboard, there the interplay of color and structure on a roller blind. By making casual details in the urban landscape the center of attention, her pictures convey the idea of documentation as well as a disarmingly keen eye for images of Vienna.
