Nastia Khlestova is the curator and founder of the independent art space 127 Garage in Kharkiv, focused on working with emerging artists and community-based practices. Over the past years, Nastia studied the functioning of self-organized spaces in different countries of Europe in order to understand their experiences and put it into practice.
During the last three months, she has scanned the Viennese art scene in the scope of the residency program Curators’ Agenda: Vienna 2022, adding a new position to her research.
In this presentation marking the end of her residency program, Nastia will talk about the experience of self-organization in the art field in Ukraine, where grassroots initiatives often play a more important role than public and private art institutions. The presentation will focus on the formation and development of self-organized exhibition spaces in Ukraine, the patterns in the functioning of such organizations in different regions, and the impact of their activities on the development of visual arts in general.
Departing from her research in Vienna, Nastia will also outline the differences and similarities between the local Viennese and the Ukrainian independent art scenes.
