Annalisa Piras is a London-based Italian film director, producer and journalist. She is currently the director of Springshot Productions, an independent production company which specialises in documentaries, and the co-founder and director of the Wake Up Foundation, an educational charity whose mission is to use documentaries to foster debates around Europe’s greatest challenges.
Piras’ film, Europe at Sea, a feature-length documentary co-produced by Arte and SVT chronicles the effort of the EC Commission‘s vice president Federica Mogherini to handle the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean. The film looks at Europe’s role on the global stage in light of today’s transnational security challenges and the shifting sands of geopolitics. Her previous film, The Great European Disaster Movie , has been shown all over Europe – as a wakeup call: If we don’t defend the European Union and its institutions we are in danger of losing them.
The Wake Up Europe Festival is Piras’ latest project. A three-days event in Turin in May 2019 involved film screenings, debates and music to discuss the future of Europe and attempts to connect Europeans in a citizens‘ debate: ‘‘Wake up Europe! invites you to shape your future and the future of Europe. We want you to join us as we take this first step in charting a better course.“
