Ioa Silver Event - RE: Biennale

IOA Sliver Event
RE: Biennale

December 15th, 2 pm, Lichthof 1

The Exhibition:
The Sliver exhibition RE:Biennale is a remix, an alteration of the content originally selected to represent Austria within the Austrian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2010, curated and commissioned by Eric Owen Moss and entitled New Architecture ‘Under Construction.’ In the history of the Biennale, the debate over curatorial bias in relation to national representation has been heated and this year was no exception with the striking appointment of a non-Austrian curator. The exhibition pieces were organized in the pavilion based on whether they were created inside or outside of Austria and whether the participant is Austrian or a foreign architect working in Austria.

In this exhibition, the intention of the remix is to highlight the quantity and quality of work in the original exhibition connected with the Angewandte, by professors, students, alumni and frequent guest lecturers. The work fragmented in the original format is collected and has been reassembled here as a cohesive, if diverse, whole. The Venice Biennale is one of the most important stages and highly curated venues for exhibiting architecture. It is significant to look at a single institution’s impact on this venue. The saturation of the work within a single gallery- limited to the new exhibition format of a single horizontal plane and adjacent vertical screen- works to dissolve differences of author, origin, and intention. The work is remixed on a common surface, equalizing the history and highlighting the artifact.

Sliver Event:
The exhibition fosters a dialogue that will culminate in a panel discussion on December 15th, 2010 at 2pm. The panel will discuss the meaning and significance of Biennales, the challenge of displaying architecture and debate the value of collective versus individual representation.

Moderator: Rector Gerald Bast
Speakers: Peter Noever, Wolf D. Prix, Greg Lynn, Eva Schlegel

A Reception to follow.
